One of my Famous Blogging Brothers used the old spelling in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/view\/articles\/2018-06-01\/trump-s-pardon-of-dinesh-d-souza-undermines-the-rule-of-law\">today\u2019s column<\/a> and it brought me up short. Dictionaries appear to be OK with it, more or less, although it\u2019s a bit d\u00e9mod\u00e9. The phrase \u201cthere\u2019s no guaranty\u201d currently has 24 KGhits to 6,680 KGhits for \u201cthere\u2019s no guarantee\u201d; the numbers are of course wildly inaccurate but clearly the one with a <i>y<\/i> is much less common. The <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/ngrams\/graph?content=guarantee%2Cguaranty&amp;case_insensitive=on&amp;year_start=1900&amp;year_end=2000&amp;corpus=15&amp;smoothing=3&amp;share=&amp;direct_url=t4%3B%2Cguarantee%3B%2Cc0%3B%2Cs0%3B%3Bguarantee%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BGuarantee%3B%2Cc0%3B.t4%3B%2Cguaranty%3B%2Cc0%3B%2Cs0%3B%3Bguaranty%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BGuaranty%3B%2Cc0%3B%3BGUARANTY%3B%2Cc0\">n-grams<\/a> tell a similar story.\r\n<p>What do you think\u2014if you were editing that column, would you have insisted on the double-e?\r\n<p>Thanks,<br>-Ed.\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is the -y version overly pretentious?
