{"id":17482,"date":"2018-06-28T11:43:48","date_gmt":"2018-06-28T18:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/?p=17482"},"modified":"2018-06-28T11:45:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-28T18:45:00","slug":"swug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2018\/06\/28\/swug\/","title":{"rendered":"swug"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Yesterday, Sumana told me about Martin Van Buren\u2019s anti-Harrison <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_presidential_election,_1840#Campaign_songs\/slogans\">campaign song<\/a> from the 1840 US presidential election.<\/p>\r\n<p>Harrison\u2019s slogan and campaign song was, famously, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tippecanoe_and_Tyler_Too\">Tippecanoe and Tyler Too<\/a>\u201d (because Harrison had been a military leader at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Tippecanoe\">battle of Tippecanoe<\/a>). Van Buren\u2019s campaign song was to the tune of \u201cRockabye, Baby,\u201d and the first verse goes like this:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<div class=\"stanza\">\r\n<p>Rockabye, baby, Daddy's a Whig<\/p>\r\n<p>When he comes home, hard cider he'll swig<\/p>\r\n<p>When he has swug<\/p>\r\n<p>He'll fall in a stu<\/p>\r\n<p>And down will come Tyler and Tippecanoe.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>I suspect this may be the only instance of the word <i>swug<\/i> (as the past tense of <i>swig<\/i>) in American political history, but that\u2019s not easily searchable, so I may be wrong.
