{"id":17574,"date":"2018-08-28T10:01:27","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T17:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/?p=17574"},"modified":"2018-08-27T20:08:34","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T03:08:34","slug":"arsy-tansy-revisited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2018\/08\/28\/arsy-tansy-revisited\/","title":{"rendered":"arsy-tansy, revisited"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Back in 2012, I wrote an entry about encountering the word <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2012\/01\/16\/arsy-tansy\/\">arsy-tansy<\/a> in <cite>The Spy Who Came in from the Cold<\/cite>, and discovering that that term didn\u2019t exist anywhere else.<\/p>\r\n<p>Just now, I came across the word <i>arsy-versy<\/i> in an Anthony Boucher story, \u201cThe Chronokinesis of Jonathan Hull.\u201d (\u201cThe disturbingly arsy-versy normal world\u2026\u201d) It turns out that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/arsy_versy\">arsy-versy<\/a><\/i> means basically the same thing as <i>topsy-turvy<\/i>.<\/p>\r\n<p>I had a moment of thinking that perhaps the line in the Le Carr\u00e9 book had been a typo for <i>arsy-versy<\/i>, but that word doesn\u2019t make a lot of sense in the context where <i>arsy-tansy<\/i> appeared. So this new development probably doesn\u2019t solve the mystery.
