It wasn\u2019t odd, really. The article was <a href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/article\/californias-bullet-train-goes-rails\">California\u2019s Bullet Train Goes Off the Rails<\/a>, by David Dayen, and Mr. Dayen was mentioning the difference between long-haul and short-haul travel. That\u2019s exactly the sort of place you would expect to find the term.\r\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t expect to find <i>short haul<\/i> used metaphorically, or in describing anything, really, other than trucking and transport. But <i>long haul<\/i> is used metaphorically very frequently, probably more frequently outside the discussion of transport than in it. And that means that people like me, who don\u2019t discuss transport or trucking all that often, use <I>long haul<\/i> much more than <i>short haul<\/i>. That was my feeling, at any rate, so I looked it up on the ngram:\r\n<p>\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe name=\"ngram_chart\" src=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/ngrams\/interactive_chart?content=long+haul%2C+short+haul&#038;year_start=1800&#038;year_end=2000&#038;corpus=15&#038;smoothing=3&#038;share=&#038;direct_url=t1%3B%2Clong%20haul%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2Cshort%20haul%3B%2Cc0\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\r\n<p>It looks as if up through the mid-thirties, <i>short haul<\/i> shows up more frequently than <i>long haul<\/i>, but <i>long haul<\/i> had more staying power\u2026 by 1950, <i>long haul<\/i> was gaining in frequency and <i>short haul<\/i> losing, and now the <i>long haul<\/i> is probably twenty times as frequent as the <i>short<\/i>.
