{"id":18122,"date":"2020-01-07T09:47:38","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T17:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/?p=18122"},"modified":"2020-01-07T09:49:57","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T17:49:57","slug":"pots-and-puns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2020\/01\/07\/pots-and-puns\/","title":{"rendered":"Pots and puns"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Edward FitzGerald\u2019s translation of Omar Khayyam\u2019s <cite>Rubaiyat<\/cite> includes several verses making an analogy between clay pots and humans, and between the Potter and God.<\/p>\r\n<p>In a note, FitzGerald adds:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>This Relation of Pot and Potter to Man and his Maker figures far and wide in the Literature of the World, from the time of the Hebrew Prophets to the present; when it may finally take the name of \u201cPot theism,\u201d by which Mr. Carlyle ridiculed Sterling\u2019s \u201cPantheism.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>The reference is to an <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarcommons.sc.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1143&context=ssl\">exchange<\/a> between <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Carlyle\">Thomas Carlyle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Sterling_(author)\">John Sterling<\/a>:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>Sterling is reported to have responded to something that Carlyle had said with, \u201cWhy, that\u2019s Pantheism,\u201d to which Carlyle is reported to have replied: \u201cLet it be Pot-theism, so long as it\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>But FitzGerald is taking Carlyle\u2019s pun to a new level by connecting it to the God-as-Potter metaphor.
