{"id":18244,"date":"2020-06-15T14:09:59","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T21:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/?p=18244"},"modified":"2020-06-15T14:09:59","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T21:09:59","slug":"blm-oyf-yiddish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2020\/06\/15\/blm-oyf-yiddish\/","title":{"rendered":"#BLM oyf yiddish"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>At the Jewish Current, there\u2019s an essay by Anthony Russell about <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishcurrents.org\/translating-black-lives-matter-into-yiddish\/\">Translating Black Lives Matter into Yiddish<\/a> that I found fascinating and moving.\r\n<p>Two things struck me: first, the central point of the essay, the decision to transliterate, rather than translate, the phrase <i>Black Lives Matter<\/i> for the purposes of Yiddish-language discussion of the movement. I found Mr. Russell\u2019s prose powerful and persuasive on that topic.\r\n<p>And second, one of the proposed translations to supplement that transliteration: <i>Afroamerikaner Blut iz Nisht Keyn Vaser<\/i>. Not a direct, but an idiomatic translation\u2014African-America blood ain\u2019t water.
