{"id":18386,"date":"2021-09-25T11:04:09","date_gmt":"2021-09-25T18:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/?p=18386"},"modified":"2021-09-25T11:04:09","modified_gmt":"2021-09-25T18:04:09","slug":"up-to-or-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2021\/09\/25\/up-to-or-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Up to \u2026 or more!"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Pet peeve: The phrase <i>up to [some number] or more<\/i>.<\/p>\r\n<p>I see this now and then in ads, in lines like (made-up example) \u201cThe battery lasts up to 8 hours or more!\u201d If you take that phrase literally, it\u2019s meaningless\u2014the battery might last less than 8 hours, or it might last more, who knows?<\/p>\r\n<p>Vaguely related, but not the same thing: I just saw an ad that said that Amazon\u2019s Alexa is \u201cfluent in up to 8 languages.\u201d I\u2019m not clear on what <i>up to<\/i> is doing in that sentence. Is Amazon uncertain about how many languages Alexa is fluent in?
