{"id":18472,"date":"2022-06-15T17:29:36","date_gmt":"2022-06-16T00:29:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/?p=18472"},"modified":"2022-06-15T17:31:25","modified_gmt":"2022-06-16T00:31:25","slug":"motorcade-etymology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2022\/06\/15\/motorcade-etymology\/","title":{"rendered":"motorcade etymology"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Just got curious about the word <i>motorcade<\/i>, and was surprised by a couple of things in its etymology:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n  <li>I was thinking it might be short for something like <i>motorcar parade<\/i>, to account for that <i>c<\/i> in the middle. Turns out <i>motorcade<\/i> is more or less from <i>motor cavalcade<\/i>.<\/li>\r\n  <li>It had never occurred to me that <i>cavalcade<\/i> is cognate with words like <i>cavalry<\/i> and <i>cavalier<\/i>\u2014that is, <i>cavalcade<\/i> comes from <i>cavalcare<\/i>, to ride horseback. So a <i>cavalcade<\/i> was specifically a procession of people on horses.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/word\/motorcade\">as etymonline puts it<\/a>, \u201cin 20c. <i>-cade<\/i> came to be regarded as a suffix and rode off on its own to form <i>motorcade<\/i> (1909), etc.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>(I\u2019m not sure how much to trust etymonline; MW gives less firm\/definite etymology for <i>motorcade<\/i>.
