{"id":3683,"date":"2006-09-25T21:14:25","date_gmt":"2006-09-26T04:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/neology\/2006\/09\/25\/cushy.html"},"modified":"2006-09-25T21:14:25","modified_gmt":"2006-09-26T04:14:25","slug":"cushy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2006\/09\/25\/cushy\/","title":{"rendered":"cushy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I'm always a little surprised to find that a common English word that I don't associate with Asia derives directly from an East Asian or South Asian root.<\/p>\n<p>I've known for a while, for example, that \"honcho\" (which always sounded Spanish to me) comes from Japanese \"hansho,\" \"squad leader.\"  (First appeared in English in 1955!  Much more recent than I'd have expected.)<\/p>\n<p>But it was only recently that I learned that \"cushy\" comes from a Hindi word meaning \"pleasant.\" And ultimately from Persian, so I guess that's originally more Middle Eastern than South Asian; still, not where I would've expected it to come from.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m always a little surprised to find that a common English word that I don&#8217;t associate with Asia derives directly from an East Asian or South Asian root.
