Thank you Ed Gray

Ed Gray, a sports columnist for the Boston Herald, has come out of the closet. Good for him.

For those of you not familiar with Boston and its newspapers, the Boston Herald is the tabloid-sized paper, and the Globe is the, er, newspaper-sized newspaper. The headline of this morning's Globe was Guantanamo translator seized at Logan; the Herald said "Feds nab 'spy'". The Lenny Clarke character on "It's All Relative" reads the Herald, I'm sure, and I'm equally sure that the nice gay couple who live on the hill read the Globe. Your Humble Blogger reads the Globe, of course. There are a handful of openly gay writers (tho' no sports columnists) at the Globe, but as far as I know, none at the Herald.

What I'm saying is, this took even more than the usual amount of guts. The Herald is probably not the most welcoming place to work for people who express differences of opinion, lifestyle and heritage, and sports bureaus also have that reputation, and the Herald Sports Bureau is, well, I have no direct knowledge, but I'm saying it took guts.

Also, as he points out, the treatment of homosexuals in sports is pretty rough. Of course, he covers horseracing; I expect the jockey's changing rooms are not much different from football locker rooms, when it comes to that, but he can do an awful lot of work without going into them, unlike a football reporter. And then, Your Humble Blogger likes horseracing, so there's that in his favor, too.

Anyway, thank you Ed Gray.

Redintegro Iraq,
-Vardibidian.
