Have I ever mentioned on this site that I adore college hockey? My own Terriers had a lousy year, most of which I missed as I am no longer in the land of the Beanpot. I idly checked the potential NCAA brackets today, though, and discovered that the divisional championship in Hockey East went into triple-overtime last night, before the Minutemen had to go home and paint the garage.
Triple.
My goodness, Gentle Reader will say, how often does that happen? Well, in 2002, the ECAC title went to double overtime. And I won’t soon forget this quadruple-overtime NCAA playoff game, as I paced the floor pressing the dying transistor radio to my ear, listening to the bewildered radio men trying to figure out which commercials to play during the fifth interval. Those are ones I remember.
I suppose that in a low-scoring sport, ties are more likely, and at a high level of play (with good goalies), double- and triple-overtime games shouldn’t surprise me much. But wow.
It’s my second spectator sport, really just something to tide me over during the ice time, but I sure enjoy it. Well done, Minutemen. Good luck in the NCAAs, Black Bears. Beat the damn‘ Eagles for us.
