Just wondering

Are you ever, Gentle Reader, as you pass through a parking lot glancing at all the magnetically affixed declarations on the back end of the cars, seized with a mischievous impulse to swap ’em all around? I don’t mean making people appear to endorse ideas they abhor, just reshuffling amongst the people who agree anyway. Somebody might not notice that her car no longer says ‘support our troops’ but rather ‘pray for our troops’, or that perhaps her wordless ribbon is no longer yellow but red, white and blue. Not notice right away, anyway, while the car is parked next to the previous owner of the ‘freedom isn’t free’ flag which now says ‘united we stand’. A few days later, at work or at home, she might think “hunh, didn’t I get the other one?” The fellow who had a Bush/Cheney rectangle might register the flag-adorned Big W right away, or not until the next day or the day after. Maybe I’d get lucky and swap out a ReDefeat Bush with a Kerry/Edwards, although at least in my town those are likelier to have been affixed with adhesive (or have been removed long since). It would be a lot of work, though, and since I’d have to imagine the reactions over the next week, anyway, it’s better to just imagine the whole thing, staying in out of the snow, sipping hot tea.

Thank you,
-Vardibidian.

The closest I’ve come is the desire to replace all the shredded and stained American flags hanging off ribbon-adorned vehicles with new ones, perhaps accompanied by a brochure explaining the laws and customs regarding treatment and desecration of the flag. Leaving aside any questions of philosophical desecration, a concept which is beyond the capacity of a jingoistic society to comprehend, physical desecration is tremendously disrespectful. My grandfather’s coffin was covered with an American flag in respect of the service he gave to a country he loved, and seeing the filthy tatters of another one fluttering in the exhaust wake of a single-driver SUV is revolting.

    That’s my Coronation Day post.

Interesting; I don’t think I see very many magnetic items on cars. I think most of what I see are bumper stickers, firmly adhesed. But I could well be wrong.
