It’s 2019! It’s time for the Invisible Primary to become more visible!
Sorry, y’all. I know some Gentle Readers, despite still being Gentle Readers of this Tohu Bohu, are not ready for Presidential talk. And frankly, I’m not really ready either. Back in the summer of 2003, I went through the candidates in some detail, looking through their histories for clues as to what sort of President they would be. I won’t writing much about our Party’s candidates, this winter at any rate. But I think people who are politically active in our Party would benefit from thinking at this stage about what it means to be a good President, in the sense of what qualities, strengths, backgrounds and priorities would be likely to signal a candidate who would, if elected, disappoint us less than (f’r’ex) Jimmy Carter.
It's probably too early to do that, but what it isn't too early to do is to ask what sort of President we think we want. An ass-kicker? A coalition-builder? A competent manager? An inspiring leader? A policy wonk? Of course, we want all of those, and of course, we will eventually want whatever we haven't got, but this is the time for telling the party actors what we value. The candidates (all thirty-odd of them) want to be what we want them to be, and this is the real chance to tell them what that is.
