He always crushes me

Well, and once again Your Humble Blogger has failed to be awarded the Ig Nobel prize for literature, or anything else for that matter. I am glad that they recognized the works of the Nigerian fantasists, who speak to something I think is truly universal.

On another note, do y’all think that YHB should follow Jed over to MT? There are some advantages, and some disadvantages. The advantages would be, um, well, I suspect we’d get more visitors from the outside world. Or is that a disadvantage? There would be a New Look and Feel, and couldn’t we all use a new look, and feel? There would be some sort of excerpt/pull-quote deal on the main page, which might be nice, or might not be. There would be Categories, which might be useful, I suppose, sorta. There would be a Feed, although Jed could do me a feed without the MT business, if people rilly want one.

The thing is, my inclination is to use the new system, but I’m having trouble figuring out why. Anybody?

For me there’s always the temptation of doing something new just because I can. It sounds like you might suspect yourself of doing the same thing. It’s not always a bad motivation, but it’s definitely worth looking at.

    Hm.

I do like the idea of you getting a feed (and would happily use my paid account to syndicate you on LJ). But as you say, MT is not necessary for that.

You could use your login to authenticate your comments with OpenID at LJ and create your own friends list (and be added to our friends’ lists). On the other hand, if you’ve set up a TypeKey for commenting over at Jed’s journal, you could use that. Furthermore, you might prefer commenting anonymously, signing the comments manually, and reading other people’s flists. I should not presume to see that as a universal advantage.

The exposure to the outside world–would that be through Technorati and suchlike websites? Or does MT have something similar to this RSS feed from LJ (which I suspect was responsible for the one troll I’ve ever had to ban (Or else it was the Random LJ User)). I’ve been linked occasionally so that people outside the group of people you and I know come and comment. On the one hand, it’s kind of disconcerting. On the other hand, I kind of like knowing that I’m interesting (or at least providing interesting content) to people who don’t already know me. (External validation–ooh, shiny!) So, um, yeah. That wasn’t very coherent.

I like the format the way it is. I would also like it in MT format. I have no idea if this comment was at all helpful–it seems to continue fence-sitting.

The one thing I can think of that MT has that Jed’s home-grown doesn’t is a large group of people writing plug-ins for it to do all kinds of things. But if you just want the basics, that’s probably not relevant.

is there an interface out there for reading comments on blogs? it seems like this is becoming the great public space of the net, and yet its usability, bleah.

RSS on comments would thread them backwards…
