Kind of fun to read an Economist article from July 1991, which said among other things, "They (American voters) choose Republicans for president and Democrats for congressmen." The article, called "The headless party that haunts the Hill," was about how, since the Dems held the House and Senate but not the Presidency, they had no single leader, no face that was nationally identified with the party. Three years later, of course, the Democrats held the White House, the Republicans held the Senate and the House, and there was no question who were the party leaders: Bill and Newt. A few years after that, the Republicans were headless themselves, until W. came. Now, W. is the face of the Republican Party, and the face of the Democratic Party is ... Bill Clinton. Still. Which isn't necessarily a problem, but does make things confusing. Anyway, strange to think how the political world changes every few years. Hopeful, too.
