Puff Piece: The fandom that made me

A recommendation: The Grauniad has been running a series called The fandom that made me, where various writers talk about being a fan of some musical group or performer, usually but not always in their teen years. Given the age range of their writers, the performers pretty much span the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Some work better than others for me, of course, but the accumulation of them really speaks to me about the nature of (a) fanatical love of a performer, and (2) youth. I recommend dipping in to the series at random, picking a few performers you are familiar with and at least one or two you aren't. Each entry is a little under 1000 words, so not too terribly overwhelming to read half-a-dozen over a week or so.

I feel like I should add a nice long Vardibidian-style essay about obsessively stanning musicians in one’s teenage and pre-teen years, but it’s terribly complicated (of course) and I think I’d be unlikely to actually write it and post it if I get started on that. Anyway, y’all know that Elvis Costello fandom is what made me.

Tolerabimus quod tolerare debemus,
-Vardibidian.
