On Drugs

Your Humble Blogger is not, as it happens, a huge fan of Geov Parrish, but I found a recent column of his on the Working for Change site very provocative.

I'm not a libertarian on the drug issue; I approve, more or less, of the government regulating the use of mind-altering or even emotion-altering drugs, particularly addictive ones. But Mr. Parrish is persuasive that if Mr. Limbaugh could work at the level he did for so long whilst abusing OxyContin, then perhaps OxyContin is not such a terror as we had been led to believe.

Of course, it's not a surprise that even within the drug war, which is a questionable use of national resources to begin with, resources are allocated absurdly. If you are interested in that topic, the excellent David S. Bernstein has a relevant article in this weekend's Boston Phoenix.

I got a telemarketing call this morning from someone who went on at length about how police are risking their lives in the War on Drugs, trying to (“as we all know”) save our children. He asked if he could rely on me to do my bit, and I said no. I was tempted to explain that I’d rather see those cops’ lives not put at risk by legalizing drugs, but I didn’t think it was worth arguing with him. Interesting to note that he never did make clear exactly why the police were asking for me to donate money; come to think of it, it may well have been a scam.
