Time to choose

Well, Your Humble Blogger has voted. In the end, I filled in the little oval next to ... Senator John Edwards. I’m not sure I can ultimately explain why. I was still deciding between Sen. Edwards and Sen. Kerry while brushing my teeth this morning. I expect Sen. Kerry will win the state soundly, but who knows.

I can’t decide whether I think Sen. Edwards would make a better President than Sen. Kerry. They each have strengths and weaknesses, and I have been unable to balance them. In addition, I can’t even decide who I think would have a better edge in the general election; Sen. Edwards might well lose his home state(s), or he might pick up a few southern states and win in a landslide. Sen. Kerry seems to have got the hang of campaigning (finally), and has shown nationwide strength, but he might well wind up like Northerners usually do in Presidential elections.

Anyway, I voted. And that’s, ultimately, what it’s all about.

At this point, I suspect that I will end up voting for Edwards. Unless some miracle occurs, and Dean becomes a viable force once more, I don’t feel that I should vote for him when I can actually cast a vote that might matter. For once, it looks like the nomination might not be settled by the time it reaches the NY primary, and the chance to support a viable candidate I do like over one I don’t isn’t worth the statement of principle in voting for a non-viable candidate, to me.

V: A couple weeks ago, you wrote, re Sen. Kerry: “I like him less than I ever did, and I never liked him much….”

I meant to ask about that, and now seems a good time. Your main criticisms of Kerry, back in your candidate analysis, seemed to be that he didn’t exhibit inspiring leadership and that he wasn’t very attentive to detail. Can you elaborate on what you didn’t/don’t like about him?
