On the air in three … two …

For those of you who are interested, don’t forget that Air America will begin broadcasting at noon today (Eastern, I believe). I suppose it’s the liberal answer to the Clear Channel. I fully expect to shut it off in disgust at around 12:15.

What the world needs now is clearly more punditry, more polarization, more sound bites, and more vicious divisiveness, only from the left-center ... Really, I do think that it’s a good idea to have a liberal radio network, and I support Air America enough to start the webcast playing. If nothing else, if we get us some raving lunatics of the left out there, perhaps the centrists will sound like centrists again.

Well, based on the folks involved, it seems like they’re going to at least try to be funny. I can live with vicious divisiveness if it’s funny.

Are you familiar with Harry Shearer‘s “Le Show”? I happen across it on KQED every now and then. I still haven’t been able to figure out what the show is meant to be about (and the website is apparently aimed at people who are already fans, ’cause it doesn’t appear to have any actual information on what the show is about), but I get the impression that he’s sort of the liberal (?) equivalent of Rush Limbaugh. Almost everything I’ve heard on the show consists of him reading news articles out loud, pausing for about five seconds after every sentence, in a way that suggests that he’s expecting the audience to be outraged. But I could be totally wrong; he might be reading stuff he thinks is funny, and I’m never entirely sure what his politics are.

I listened to more than an hour of Al Franken’s show, that first day, and wasn’t much impressed. The interview with Bob Kerrey was good, and I enjoyed the oddity of G. Gordon Liddy calling from his show to Al Franken’s show. It wasn’t particularly persuasive stuff, nor was it good enough to make it worth the commercials.

I listened to an hour this morning, and it was dreadful. I may at some point try again, but I may not…
