Book Report: The Danger

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it recently, but I’ve now read all of Dick Francis’ books several times each. That’s a lot; I think he’s written thirty-three mystery novels, but it may well be more. Some of them aren’t even very good. The Danger is pretty good, though.

I’ve read all of Dick Francis’ books several times each too. I’m not proud. (Or tired.)

At any rate, I like some of them very much, and if you ever feel like writing about them in more detail, know that at least one reader is interested.

For example, my two favorite things about The Danger: 1) when the protagonist refuses to record the ransom message because he objects to the literary style, and 2) (and this is one of the things I like about a lot of Dick Francis) the way that the protagonist is believable as an action hero of sorts, while at the same time seeming like an ordinary person who any of us could learn to be. He doesn’t do martial arts or shoot guns, but he can handle situations.

Well, and thanks for the interest. I didn’t mean to be entirely dismissive, but I still have two more book reports to write before the hammer falls in three and a half hours.

The other thing I really like about the book is the very different characters of the police. The two Italians, the two Englishmen, and the American are all quickly sketched out and fully entertaining.

And yes, like most of Dick Francis’ heroes, this one isn’t particularly gifted or skilled, just fairly clever and incredibly perseverent.
