Not entirely factual

Ok, and just because I’m still muzzy-headed, here’s the latest meme: Ten Things Your Humble Blogger Has Done that I Doubt Gentle Readers Have Also Done, although of course One is Never Sure.

  1. Rode through the desert on a horse with no name
  2. Tamed the Wild Things with the magic trick of staring into all their yellow eyes at once
  3. Passed the torch to a new generation of Americans—born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage—and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this Nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.
  4. Messed around with Jim
  5. Seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all [is] vanity and vexation of spirit
  6. Caught out little Suck-a-Thumb—Snip! Snip! Snip!
  7. Fell madly in love with the chaplain the first time I saw him
  8. Seen the best minds of my generation, destroyed by madness, starving, hysterical, naked, who dragged themselves through the Negro streets at dawn, looking for an angry fix
  9. Danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight
  10. Shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die

Thank you,
-Vardibidian.

Thank you, oh, thank you for this laugh, it was sorely needed this morning.

I must admit to being in on only 80% of the joke; what are the references in 6 and 7?

Well, and I hadn’t thought of it as a quiz, or I would have made it more obscure. I hope you enjoy the educational story of Conrad, aka Suck-a-thumb, which may or may not cheer you up. And it’s actually Yossarian who falls madly in love with the chaplain, on the first page of Catch-22. On reflection, it probably would have been funnier had I claimed to have stood on the burning deck, whence all but me had fled.
    Thanks,
    -V.

    Been there, done that.

    1. Took the controls of an airplane.
    2. Rode on an elephant.
    3. Played a little Ragtime in the American Bar at the Savoy.
    4. Been bitten by a dog, a horse, AND a marmot. (But really, animals like me.)
    5. Flew home with an entire duffel bag filled with pizza.
    6. Placed pins by hand at the back of bowling lanes.
    7. Rode on the hood of a car.
    8. Wrote a book report in Latin.
    9. Walked home and changed the outgoing message on my answering machine to the true statement “I’m running late because my car is in a ditch.”
    10. Toured a nuclear reactor.
