The last James Hilton book Your Humble Blogger read was Goodbye, Mr. Chips, after which I discovered that he was the same fellow who wrote Lost Horizon. At the time, I wrote I must remember to seek out his Random Harvest. That was about a year ago. I finally remembered to seek it out. It’s wonderful.
I don’t usually worry about spoilers, and I certainly don’t usually worry about spoiling a sixty-year-old book, but I think this is a wonderful book, and I don’t want any Gentle Reader who might possibly be considering reading it to walk into it with any more preconceived notions than she can help. I mean, it’s already going to color your reading to know that it’s by James Hilton (and thus is about the war, no matter what it’s about) and to know that it was published in 1941. And I don’t think you need to put that aside. But there’s a lot going on in the book—plot, yes, but other stuff, too—and I think it’s best enjoyed forwards first.
