You look good, really

Just as an observation. If a female college student decides, on a warm spring morning, to dress up a bit and look nice for a nice day, she eschews the jeans and halter top and puts on a sundress, and people say you look nice today. If a male college student decides, on a warm spring morning, to dress up a bit and look nice for a day, he eschews the jeans and t-shirt and puts on—what?—flannel trousers and a shirt and tie? And people say big job interview today?

No, no. To him, the people say “you rrrrrook mahverrous!”

Oh, and “jeez, man. The tie’s got to go. Nice pants, though.”

Hmm. I guess that’s so, but it strikes me that wearing a tie is “formal” in a way that a sundress isn’t. I’ve certainly (in my handsomer youth) worn, say, linen trousers and a white oxford on a spring day and been told “you look nice”.

There are also ways of “dressing up” for men that are pretty clearly not meant for a job interview and so presumably wouldn’t get that response. Say matching trousers and vest with a fancy but open-necked shirt. Or a kilt with full gear. Or, hypothetically, a three piece pinstripe suit with a fedora.

I only dress up to make my coworkers think I have a good job interview lined up. Since I tried to institute “No Pants Thursday” as the logical next step after “Dress Down Friday,” I suppose I can’t blame them for making that assumption.
