OK, here’s the best thing about Laughing Matters, Larry Gelbart’s memoir: back when he was writing for Bob Hope, you had to check each page carefully before handing it to him and count the jokes. If there were three or fewer jokes, you needed to go back and rewrite it, putting more jokes in. If, on the other hand, there were at least four jokes, then you needed to go back and put more jokes in.
