Book Report: A Hat Full of Sky

I didn’t like A Hat full of Sky as much as I liked Wee Free Men. I’m not sure why; there is a lot of good stuff in it, and it is similar to that book in tone. All in all, though, it didn’t quite work for me.

But I was reminded that even if a particular Terry Pratchett book isn’t working for me, I find his stuff very smooth to read. I relax into it. I’m fairly likely to stay up later than I had meant to, figuring I’ll just finish another chapter or maybe two, and eventually getting to the end of the book altogether. This is true even when I’m aware that I’m not particularly enjoying the thing. This is probably due to his breezy style (even in this somewhat less jokey sub-series), or to a facility with plot (in the handling, presumably, as the plots themselves aren’t anything to write home about), or perhaps it’s that combination of novelty and familiarity that comes only with a new book in an long series. But it happens pretty nearly every time.
