Deaths addenda
One source indicates that 60,000 civilians were killed during the London Blitz, from autumn 1940 through May 1941. Haven't been able to confirm that elsewhere. I recently received the copy of the Britannica DVD-ROM I ordered several weeks back (it's been on backorder); I was very excited to get it, but there are some weird bugs in it, one of which is that the article about the Blitz is inaccessible.
Ed notes that people talking about the WTC attacks are likely to quote the initial estimate of 5000 to 6000 deaths, though more recent figures suggest 3000 to 3300. Both numbers are horrendous; but 5000 does sound a lot worse than 3000 somehow.
