Interim WisCon report

Just stopping by for a minute. Been off email for something like 60 hours—left home Thursday morning, didn't get a chance to connect to WisCon's cool wireless network 'til just now.

So I'm gonna run off to socialize in a minute, but I wanted to note that so far we've counted 14 SH fiction authors in attendance; that's nearly 20% of the authors we've published. Cool. Also cool to get to meet people in person; many of them don't look anything like I imagined.

My other two comments both have to do with the flight out here on Thursday:

Thursday was the first time I've ever been on a plane piloted by a female pilot. (That I know of.) I was delighted to hear her come on the PA system and introduce herself. Very cool. I heard a rumor later that until fairly recently, airlines had a policy of not letting female pilots address the passengers, 'cause a male copilot sounds more reassuring than a female pilot. Grr. Anyway, was a nice start to WisCon.

Thursday I also heard a funny page in the airport. (In Denver, I think.) A voice came over the airport PA system that said: "Randy Fervor, Randy Fervor, please contact your party by white courtesy telephone. Randy—" and then it suddenly cut off, as though the employee had realized what she was saying.

Oh, one other minor bit of surrealism in Denver: I was wandering through the Beanie Babies store in the airport (just for something to do). I'd noticed that the TV in the shop was on, but wasn't paying attention to what was on it. Suddenly, as I walked under it, a voice said, with some urgency: "But you can't just go around cloning people!" I looked up, and realized it was the movie Multiplicity, starring Michael Keaton. A good line out of context, though.

Gotta run.
