Colonial nonsense
Thanks to Jim, I have now seen Josh Parsons's "The world's flags given letter grades," and I am a happier person as a result.
I recommend reading the methodology section first, with another window open to the alphabetical list so you can scroll around to see examples—otherwise you may have to reload the alpha list for each example.
Sample from the methodology page: The "Colonial nonsense" icon is "[u]sed for countries that have the flags of their colonial masters as a part of their flag. The colonial master in question is nearly always the UK, but that's just because French territories all use the French flag, and US external territories all use something the local military commander has created using Microsoft Frontpage."
Sample from the flags list, for the Central African Republic flag: "Do not attempt to disprove the four-colour theorem on your flag!"
I was also pleased to learn a new word. Parsons uses the term vexillilic; he seems to have made up that form of the word, but MW10 does recognize vexillology, the study of flags. Cool beans.
Parsons, btw, is a research fellow in philosophy who's working on "the metaphysics of time." I have no idea what that means.
