I continue to be surprised by hearing people refer to Microsoft Word as Microsoft. As in, "I was writing this report in Microsoft, . . ."
I suspect it's the same impulse that leads HR people to refer to the Social Security number as a Social. It's an abbreviation without thinking about what the components of the compound phrase mean.
Though in the case of using Microsoft to refer to Word, in my experience it's often an indication that the speaker doesn't know there's any other name. If you refer to "Word" or "Microsoft Word," they'll say, "What's that?"
Somehow, referring to a Mac as an Apple doesn't bother me nearly so much, and it's commonplace to refer to a car by the name of its maker ("My car is a Toyota"). But referring to a Walkman or a Clie as a Sony ("Where'd I put my Sony?") would sound weird to me.
Maybe it's just a question of familiarity and common usage, and eventually Microsoft referring to Word will sound natural to me. . . .
