Obsolescence

We all know that software rapidly becomes obsolete. But what about the word software? Specifically, in the post-capitalist economy, will the words software and hardware still be used, or will they become obsolescisms? My reasoning here is that they derive from the term ware, as in wares, things you sell; if it's given away for free, is it still a ware?

It turns out there are several meanings for ware, and even free [free-as-in-beer, for those who make that distinction] software could fit reasonably comfortably under a couple of them, so it's probably a silly distinction. Still, I wonder if someday people will think the ware part is short for beware.
