More on Firefly

I made some comment after seeing the Firefly premiere about how attractive some of the cast were. I'm not really sure what I was thinking; there are definitely some attractive cast members, but not really unusually attractive.

Still, I do find Kaylee (played by Jewel Staite) mighty cute, and I really like the character—I'm a sucker for girl-engineer characters. (So how come it was okay for there to be a bestselling series of books about a girl detective, but not a girl engineer? Why no Sue Swift series? (They probably would've been things like Sue Swift and the Automatic Mop, though.))

And I have a comment to Kaylee, after seeing the latest episode: that doctor fella isn't good enough for ya. Don't settle for him, just 'cause he's the only young and relatively sane guy on the ship! Wait for someone more interesting to come along. . . . Also, lose the Western speech mannerisms. They fit the Captain well, but they sound jarring coming from you.

Heh—looking at the abovelinked cast page, I just discovered that the guy who plays the tough dumb more or less nuts mercenary, Jayne, is none other than Adam Baldwin, who played the bodyguard kid in My Bodyguard. I would never have recognized him. Hey, Joan Cusack was in that too! I liked that movie when I was a kid. But somehow I suspect it hasn't aged well.

(Spoiler for latest episode: I was very surprised to discover that this episode was written by Joss Whedon; I thought the dialogue was uneven and the psychotic bounty hunter really unpleasant, and not in a good way.)
