Lott and editing

Trent Lott has stepped down as Senate Republican leader, but is staying in the Senate. Seems like a reasonable outcome to the situation.

But the reason I'm mentioning it here is a paragraph from the New York Times article about it:

"They don't want a senator who's a yes man for the president and Rove over here," said [an anonymous] senator, referring to Rove.

The bracketed part is my insertion to make the sentence clearer. The part that I'm amused by is the reference to Rove (Karl Rove, earlier in the article referred to as a "senior White House official" and a "top political adviser") in the quote, followed by the non-explanatory explanation "referring to Rove." Presumably either the quote originally referred to Rove indirectly, or the explanation originally explained again who Rove was, but as it stands, the explanation is meaningless.

Okay, maybe I'm the only one who's amused by this.
