No quarter
At the California Quarter Design Concept Finalist Poll, you can vote online for one of the 20 finalists in the California quarter-design contest. Interestingly, it doesn't even explicitly ask non-Californians not to participate.
Apparently California is known for:
- Golden Gate Bridge
- Hollywood
- Gold Rush
- Yosemite
- Sequoias
- a few missions
Interesting that none of the coins portrays:
- earthquakes
- Silicon Valley
- Death Valley
- the Central Valley (except the cornucopia superimposed on the state outline in one design)
- California coastline
- marijuana
- freeways
- Donner party
- Sierras (maybe in one background, not sure)
- beaches
- Lake Tahoe
- mudslides
- Willie Brown (or other politicians with colors in their names)
- gay pride
- oranges
- Marin county
- New-Age self-help seminars
- Native American people (except possibly one dark-skinned woman, but I think she's supposed to represent Queen Califia)
- Sir Francis Drake
- Japanese-American internment camps
- Chinatown
- Emperor Norton
