No quarter

At the California Quarter Design Concept Finalist Poll, you can vote online for one of the 20 finalists in the California quarter-design contest. Interestingly, it doesn't even explicitly ask non-Californians not to participate.

Apparently California is known for:

  • Golden Gate Bridge
  • Hollywood
  • Gold Rush
  • Yosemite
  • Sequoias
  • a few missions

Interesting that none of the coins portrays:

  • earthquakes
  • Silicon Valley
  • Death Valley
  • the Central Valley (except the cornucopia superimposed on the state outline in one design)
  • California coastline
  • marijuana
  • freeways
  • Donner party
  • Sierras (maybe in one background, not sure)
  • beaches
  • Lake Tahoe
  • mudslides
  • Willie Brown (or other politicians with colors in their names)
  • gay pride
  • oranges
  • Marin county
  • New-Age self-help seminars
  • Native American people (except possibly one dark-skinned woman, but I think she's supposed to represent Queen Califia)
  • Sir Francis Drake
  • Japanese-American internment camps
  • Chinatown
  • Emperor Norton
