Big and small
Interdependent definitions! I was looking for an approximate upper bound on the number of people in a settlement that could reasonably be called a village, so I looked up village (and then some related terms) in the dictionary:
city: an inhabited place of greater size, population, or importance than a town or village
town: a compactly settled area usually larger than a village but smaller than a city
village: a settlement usually larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town
hamlet: a small village
Thank you, MW10. The gostak distims the doshes. You can order the terms by size but there's absolutely no information about absolute size.
