TorCon tidbits
I've just registered to convert my Torcon supporting membership into an attending membership; looks like I'm going to WorldCon. Yay! My first Canadian convention; in fact, only the second time I've ever been in Canada. Okay, technically the third time, but the first one was only for a few hours, driving from Buffalo to Detroit a few years ago by way of Ontario. That was the time that Canadian Customs stopped me and hassled me over the fact that I was from California, which they maintained was one of those Southern states where everyone carries a gun. I'm glad to know it's not just Americans who stereotype foreigners.
Where was I? Right, Canada, Torcon, our neighbors to the north, okay, I'm back on track.
The most immediate thing you should know about Torcon, if you're going to attend, is that their programming committee is apparently meeting on Sunday the 9th (like, tomorrow, by the time you read this) to make programming decisions. If you have ideas for panels, you should go to their programming page and submit those ideas post-haste. I'm guessing that you don't need to express interest in being on panels just yet, but it couldn't hurt to do that as well while you're at the site.
The other thing to pay attention to regarding Torcon in the relatively immediate future is, of course, the Hugo deadline. If you want to nominate stuff for a Hugo, you have to do so by the end of this month, which is now only about three weeks off. I've been hoping that they'll implement a web-based Hugo-nomination form, as other WorldCons have done in recent years, but it hasn't happened yet and time's getting short; I may resort to (gasp!) paper. If you want to download a PDF version of the nomination form, see their Hugos page.
Much more about the Hugos to follow in upcoming weeks, no doubt. But not tonight.
