Daily Planet

For those who haven't seen this elsewhere (thanks to David M. for bringing it to my attention):

The only publicly-traded Australian bordello, The Daily Planet, has completed its public offering of shares; shares are now being traded on the Australian stock exchange.

Turns out that the way it works is the building management basically runs a hotel (which is what you can buy shares in), and there are private-contractor sex workers who are allowed to work in the hotel. Pay rates for the sex workers are negotiated between the workers and the clients. Building management doesn't get a cut. It's not clear to me whether management pays the workers, the workers pay management, or neither; perhaps it's a symbiotic relationship with no money passing in either direction? I have no idea.

I'm guessing it's the only business that has numerous photos of naked women in its prospectus.

The FAQ for the brothel side of the site is pretty interesting. Sounds like a much more dignified way to deal with prostitution than we manage in most places in the US. Too bad there are no male sex workers there, though.

I'm a little surprised that they haven't gotten a cease-and-desist from DC Comics for using various trademarks. The name Daily Planet may not be protectable, but the fact that they call their receptionist "Lois Lane" and (though there isn't a picture of this) apparently have a picture of Superman outside is probably actionable. Maybe DC doesn't want to call any attention to this embarrassing use of their trademarks. Or maybe trademark law doesn't work that way in Australia, dunno.
