Silliness
Someone just wrote to me asking for permission to use an excerpt from one of my columns (column mm, "A Nice Derangement") in a high school test. I was happy to grant such permission, but first I went back and re-read that particular column, which I probably haven't looked at in five years. I have no idea what drugs I was on when I wrote it, but they were awfully silly ones. Either that or I was very sleep-deprived. Some of the lines are a little forced, but (I suppose it's immodest to confess) a couple of others still make me laugh. I like it when I can tap into that primary-process place where everything is intertwingled and language short-circuits rationality to make a sort of pun-filled dream-logic.
