Two unrelated tidbits

According to a Voice of America article, Condoleezza Rice sez the administration never said Saddam Hussein was involved in the Sept. 11 attacks, and Rumsfeld agrees that (quoting the article, not Rumsfeld) "there was no indication of Iraqi involvement in the attacks." The article goes on to remind us that "[a] recent Washington Post poll said more than two-thirds of Americans believe the ousted Iraqi leader was involved."

Unrelatedly, I didn't hear 'til now that Britney Spears and Madonna kissed each other during the MTV Video Music Awards. Says Britney: "I mean, come on ... it's Madonna. If you can kiss any girl in the world, that has to be her." And when asked whether Madonna kisses better than actor Colin "Bullseye" Farrell (who'll be playing Alexander the Great in an upcoming movie), she replied: "Oh my gosh! They're both amazing kissers!" Apparently, however, "No one slipped anyone the tongue. It was just a kiss, a nice kiss."

    unfortunately, Britney seems to have forgotten that she slipped Madonna the tongue LIVE ON MTV. Like, it’s VERY VERY OBVIOUS. You can SEE HER TONGUE — even on the crappy mpg computer screen playback that I saw.

    so her denials? not particularly convincing.

    Ms. Rice, not unlike Ms. Spears, also seems to have a plausible deniability problem. I’d like to see that one debunked by people with more time to access specific Bush speeches and quote them back.

    Since Catherine O was so kind as to remind us that if it happened on TV and involved Hot Girl-On-Girl Action, it must be on the internet… looks to be a perfunctory, “this’ll rescue my celebrity status” stage kiss. As does the one right after it between Madonna and Christina Aguilera. But which was better?

    You people are going to ruin my self-respect. If only I had something pithy to add about Our Only President, to save face.

    ah, well, I never said she wanted to get in the sack with Madonna. She might, but I have no info about it. But it’s just so ludicrous to keep saying that it was, like, a peck on the cheek or something — like, dude, do you not realize that your entire reading audience SAW you?

    Well, I mean, of course she does. She’s being deliberately disingenuous in the way that drives me the MOST crazy about her — I just can’t stand it. And she does this all the time.

    I have a lot of friends that bring Britney to my attention frequently, so I’ve had a long time to get worked up over this 🙂

    It’s mildly frightening just how orchestrated a kiss can be. I assume (being relatively pop-culture ignorant) that, in that video clip, the cut to a reaction shot of a young man in the audience looking uncomfortable in the middle of the performance means that that’s Britney’s boyfriend (Justin Timberlake? or am I out of date?) and that we are presumed to be interested in how he feels about his girlfriend smooching with the Material Girl. And I am almost sure that the reaction shot was not only timed and prepared, but cleared with his publicist — imagine the swarm of cell phone calls between the various P.R. departments and agencies of the various performers involved (did Ms. Aguilera’s manager lobby for the first kiss? Or did they prefer the second kiss?). I wonder, Catherine, if the matter of how much tongue and whose to whom was not contractually negotiated by people wearing power suits… whether or not the players then followed through on any such agreements being another matter…
