Favorite places

Thanks to Kam, I now have a couple of new favorite places:

Favorite place in Salt Lake City even though I've never been there in person: the astonishing new Salt Lake City public library. You can see photos and layouts in a Salt Lake Tribune article. It's amazing, and now I wish we'd gone in when we drove past it back in March or whenever I was out there. And the library, in addition to having amazing architecture, a cool layout, and sensible and aesthetically pleasing design choices, exhibits entertaining art. Perhaps I'll get some photos from Kam, or a link to a relevant web page.

Favorite place in Santa Cruz: Well, okay, this one's harder, 'cause there are a lot of great places in Santa Cruz. But favorite place to live in Santa Cruz if I had unlimited funds would have to be West Cliff. Great ocean views, plus easy walking distance to the resting place of the monarch butterflies, where they spend the winter.

To avoid death threats from the east-coasterners among you, I'll refrain from talking about the weather in Santa Cruz today. But I will note that summer appears to still be going strong out here, for the moment.

Mmm. Santa Cruz. I miss it.

And on an unrelated note, Jed — I sent you edits to “Living with the Harpy” tonight, but the sff.net mailserver is having conniption fits today, so let me know if you don’t get it by tomorrow, and I’ll have Heather forward it to you.

Though what with the mail server dying of whooping cough, you might have trouble getting in touch with me. You can always write to Heather, I guess.

The Salt Lake library is amazing. Plus, numerous fast internet connections 🙂

A lot of wonderful buildings in Salt Lake — I also recommend the convention center, with its weird wind sculptures, and the giant Mormon building with the meadow on top of it.

The weather up here in the SF Bay Area is pretty nice, too.

I need to visit Santa Cruz. I’ve been there but I didn’t get to see much.

Thanks much, Tim! In case you don’t get my email, figured I’d mention here that I received the edits.

Agreed, Fred, that there are a bunch of cool buildings in SLC. But many of them seem to me to be a little overdone, a little kitschy, whereas the library is something I think is lovely, as far as I can tell from pictures, especially on the inside.

Claris: welcome! Agreed that the weather up here (I’m in Mountain View) has been nice (though too hot last week)—I didn’t want to rub it in for those currently suffering through a hurricane. 🙂 Santa Cruz is great; probably where I would choose to live if I didn’t have this pesky income thing to worry about. If you haven’t seen the redwoods down there, I strongly recommend ’em.

Hey, Tim, weren’t you looking for places in Santa Cruz for your villians to raze and defile?

Oh, I’d love to live in Santa Cruz! It’s just so lovely and warm and there’s a really good vibe about the place. Not to mention lots of cool shops, nature (ocean and mountains nearby), restaurants . . .

    Ah, well. Someday . . .
