Sky Captain!

Toby Buckell points to the trailer for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. My reaction pretty much duplicates Toby's, so I'll just quote him: "Dude! Zeppelins, retro-future pulp schlock. I'm in."

It also looks a bit like Rocketeer with better special effects. I really like the sort of quasi-black-and-white look to it, and with Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie, it should at least have nice eye candy even if it somehow turns out not to be any good.

If you’ve seen Miyazaki’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky, you’ll be disturbed that the enemy robots in Sky Captain are uncannily similar to Laputa’s peaceful guardian robots. This is highly disturbing.

I can never decide whether I like Jude Law or just think he always ends up in really neat movies.

The robots in Sky Captain are borrowed from the same source as the robots in Laputa and are truer to the source character — an old Max Fleischer Superman cartoon.

Sadly, Sky Captain looks like it will be mildly pretty, utterly unoriginal and outright incompetently directed.

Hannah: I more or less agree about Jude Law. Hey, he’s gonna play Lemony Snicket in the upcoming Series of Unfortunate Events movie!

Zak: Thanks for the info! Btw, I replaced your image with a link to the image; it’s generally considered bad form to use a URL from another server for an image displayed inline. More about the movie soon in another entry, I think.

Ugh. I’m not particularly inspired by this trailer to go see the movie.
