TV

Kam and I recently watched the new Battlestar Galactica miniseries (thanks to David H). I was pretty dubious about it from the start, but it quickly won me over; we both ended up enjoying it quite a bit. I was never a fan of the original series (I think I saw half an episode once, so I knew just enough to recognize the oddly-shaped playing cards), but Kam was, and she liked this new version too.

I don't know that I'd go so far as to say that it reinvents science fiction TV; I don't think it does much newer or better in terms of characterization and mature handling than, say, B5, or what I've heard of later seasons of DS9 (which I gave up on around season 2; someone recently remarked that I should tell them when I'm giving up on a series, because that tends to be about the time it starts getting good). But it's way better than a lot of sf TV, and it made me look forward to more. And in fact, a rumor says that the Sci Fi Channel has now ordered six more hour-long episodes; I hope it can continue as strong as the miniseries.

See also John Sullivan's review at SH, which provided an insight I hadn't thought of regarding a key moment early in the miniseries.

In other TV news, Kam and I rented and watched another three episodes of Six Feet Under. It continues (at least through the sixth episode of season 1) to be quirky and odd and fascinating and sometimes funny and sometimes even moving. I think what I like best about it is the depth it allows its characters: they have good sides and bad sides, they make mistakes but they also do things right, they're flawed but sympathetic. They keep surprising me: there are unexpected strengths and hidden weaknesses. I don't know how long the show can keep that up, but I like it so far.

I’ve only seen the first season of SFU so far, but I really liked it. Looking forward to plowing through seasons 2 and 3 (on tape and my Tivo, respectively) when I have time…

I found the first season of Six Feet Under to be excellent, the second decent but somewhat lacking, and the third much improved over the second, but still not quite as good as the first. I think it’s worth watching through the second so that you can watch and enjoy the third, but the quality definitely declined there for a while.
