Example
An engineer at work recently used an example.com domain name in a code sample. I thought, Yeah, that's cute, but whoever actually owns the domain example.com will probably get mad. And then I thought, Huh, I wonder who does own that domain.
So I wandered over to example.com, and was rather surprised at what I found there:
It turns out that the domain names example.com, example.net, and example.org are officially "reserved for use in documentation and are not available for registration."
That's totally cool: simple, elegant, straightforward. I'm very pleased and impressed with the powers-that-be for coming up with the idea. In fact, my only complaint about it is that nobody told me about it before. I'll be using it a lot from now on.
