High Thin Wire

Had a lovely long dinner-and-talk at a pub with Kate B. last night. Unfortunately, we didn't get any actual writing done. So we decided to get together on Sunday and definitely do some writing.

I've been completely neglecting to read Kate's current ongoing piece of online fiction—a multi-viewpoint sf serial titled High Thin Wire (illustrated by Mats Holmgren)—and I bet you have too. Kate says: "It's been described as 'bodyguard noir'. . . . It's adult cyberpunk-ish, graphic (both violence and sex) and serial. Read from the bottom up, like you would a normal blog." Here's a bit from the first entry/installment:

The face in the mirror is a good face.

Good, like handsome. Good, like trustworthy.

I paid for everything else. The body, the training, the wire, the beta that got me the job tonight and kept my client happy. Dowager sixty, with enough money that she knew the tux was mine and my diamond cufflinks were real.

She had six dogs on a leash. Not including me.

Blogspot makes things a little hard to navigate, so here's a roadmap:

You can start with the character intros for Butte, Vaughn, and Ace.

Then read the two entries from January (starting at the bottom of the page, not that it matters in this case) and two more from February. (Note that the dates on the entries are the dates of posting; they don't correspond, as far as I can tell, to dates in the story. So each story installment is posted to a blog, but the content isn't especially blog-like.)

March introduces Zephyr ("Six foot two Asian beauty, you fuckers can never tell if I'm Korean or Japanese or Vietnamese or Chinese or what the fuck"—oh, and she's blind), and adds three new entries.

Then there are two more entries in April, and two more (so far) in May.

It's good stuff. Y'all should go check it out.
