Another latest-comments tweak

It's been pointed out that if you look regularly at the main most-recent-entries page of my journal, you can see fairly easily which recent entries have had new comments posted to them; thus, the most-recent-comments list is somewhat redundant most of the time (though it's nice to be able to see who posted recent comments, and in what order). Someone suggested instead showing the most recent comments for entries that are no longer on the front page. That still seems a little odd to me, but given the high volume of comments on the last couple entries, I figured it was worth a try. So take a look at the most recent comments on older entries version and let me know what you think. Is it more useful than showing the most recent comments regardless of what entry they're on, the way the journal main page does now?

I thought that one was a really good idea when it was proposed, and, upon looking at the prototype, I still think it’s a really good idea.

(BTW, on that version, an extra space has crept in between “comments” and the closing parenthesis after each entry title.)

While I’m not wild about it… I like to be able to see who posted comments, not just that comments were posted. Also I have a crap memory for numbers–“5 comments posted” doesn’t mean anything to me, because I don’t remember if there were 4 or 5 the last time I came, but I can tell from the names which ones are new to me.

What browser are you using? I don’t keep track of the numbers either, but the color-coding for visited links makes it easy to see whether any threads on the main page have new comments: if it’s purple, nothing’s changed; if it’s blue, there’s a new one. Granted, this works only if you use the same computer and browser every time you visit, and you’re not in the habit of clearing the history of visited pages in your browser, but I’d have assumed that would apply for most people…
