Items: Politics, religion, action heroines, asexuality

I have a vague feeling that the following items sorta kinda go together, even though I can't quite articulate why:

  • A short animated movie, Pirates & Emperors, by Eric Henry. It's very heavy-handedly political, to the point that I probably wouldn't be linking to it were it not for the stylistic similarities to a certain series of educational cartoons: think Schoolhouse Rock as written by Noam Chomsky. (Thanks, metasilk!)
  • "Apocalypse, Nu?" in the New York Observer discusses Tim (Left Behind) LaHaye's recent book deal with Bantam Dell, and more specifically with Bantam Dell president Irwyn Applebaum, who (says the article) happens to be Jewish.
  • Kam points to LiP Magazine, which Lisa Jervis, the editor of Bitch Magazine, describes as "the best lefty political magazine you've never heard of." And indeed I had never heard of it, but I rather like its article "Hot Girl-on-Girl Action: The Peculiar Problem of Politics, Pornography, & the Ass-Kicking Babe," by none other than the aforementioned Lisa Jervis. I skipped a couple paragraphs toward the end 'cause I'm still not sure if I'm going to see Kill Bill, and I don't entirely agree with Jervis's assessment of various other films (in particular, I think there's more going on in some of the films she mentions than repackaged pornography), but I do think she makes some smart and interesting points, without being knee-jerk.
  • AVEN, the Asexual Visibility and Education Network, provides some good resources about asexuality; New Scientist provides an article, "Glad to Be Asexual," that covers the basic idea, the fact that some people have essentially no interest in sex.

And with that, it's time I pumpkinized.

I guess I’m glad someone found something to like in “Kill Bill”, but saying “It’s more feminist than ‘Tomb Raider’” isn’t much of a compliment . . . (And, me, I found the scenes she sees as potentially empowering to be simply tacky — though no more so than a lot of other scenes, I guess.)
