Items: Animation, Popes

A couple of ultra-cool animated thingies, one interactive and one not:

  • Baby Name Wizard's NameVoyager lets you see how popular a given first name has been in the US over time. Requires Java, and was a lot faster/smoother on a Windows laptop than on my PowerBook G4 (but still quite usable on my PowerBook). The display changes as you type the name, so it's not only informative but visually nifty. (Thanks, Susan L!)
  • Play, by Dustball. A fabulous Flash animated percussion piece; very slow to load, but well worth the wait if you have broadband. Not interactive, just a movie. Be sure to watch the ending; the exits are way cool. (Thanks, Amy S!)

Also some non-animated stuff, about the Papal succession:

  • In the tradition of "Hot or Not?" and "Geek or Not?", here's Pope or Nope? (Thanks, Will Q!)
  • Here's the Popapalooza 2005 playoff brackets. (Thanks, Charles D!)
  • On a more serious note, Time provides a Papal Succession Primer. Particularly interesting bit: "While for centuries only cardinals have been elected pope, in theory, any adult male Roman Catholic is . . . a potential candidate for the papacy." (Thanks, Jacob M!)

Thanks for the baby name thingie; it let us see that Theodore’s name is just about as unfashionable as we wanted it to be. Though that was far from the only reason for choosing it. *grin*
