Chocolate Festival today at Cal Academy

Sorry for the late notice: today is the Summer Chocolate Festival at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

I won't be there, but I thought it was vaguely conceivable that some of y'all locals might see this in time and be interested. Though it starts in two hours; it goes from 11 am to 4:30 pm. And by "festival," they apparently mostly mean "series of lectures and learning experiences." There'll be a curandero, a botanist, and live cockroaches from the tropical rainforest. Also, you can "test handmade chocolate cosmetic products from Lush," though I gather those are nonedible.

If you can't make it to that today, you can still attend Chocolate: The Exhibition through September 5.

I’m not sure it’s quite approrpiate to mention Chocolate Festival when it’s Too Far Away! Augh! Want chocolate!

But then, I always want chocolate, so that’s hardly news (and probably leading/has led to insulin resistance, so maybe this is just a test. This was a test, and only a test….)

    Um. Right. Chocolate?

It wasn’t at clear to me whether they’re actually having any chocolate at the Chocolate Festival, or whether it’s just talking about chocolate. Did any of y’all go? Can you enlighten us? It hardly seems fair to call something a Chocolate Festival if there isn’t any chocolate to eat. We want truth in advertising!

Anyway, I apologize for tantalizing people who are too far away. Metasilk, if you remind me, I’ll bring you some very nice chocolate from California to make up for it, next time I see you. (Which will probably, alas, not be for a while. Hence the need for a reminder.)

P.S.: Although Scharffen Berger is still my favorite, last time the subject came up I ought to have mentioned Seattle Chocolates. I just rediscovered that they’re available in a little store not far from where I live (Milk Pail Market), and I’ve been happily nibbling on them. So I recommend those too.

Is it too late to hop on the complain about chocolate teasing in order to obtain promise of future chocolates bandwagon? If not, um, I’m terribly disappointed to hear about this wonderful-sounding chocolate festival when I’m stuck here on the East Coast with no chocolate. Well, not a lot of chocolate, anyway.

What I want to know is, what the heck are cockroaches doing at a chocolate festival? That just seems all wrong.

Okay, okay, I followed the link to the Chocolate Festival website and saw the little blip about the cockroaches. So they’re important to the cacao ecosystem. Whatever. I still think it’s wrong to have cockroaches at a chocolate festival. Put you right off chocolate, that will.
