Encore the… fifth? Sure, why not.

Hello, Gentle Readers! It’s time for another episode of Encore!, the kind of annoying internet game of song lyrics. I give you a list of words, and you give me song lyrics that contains them. This time all the songs I have in mind are by a particular songwriter, and I’ll award 25 Bragging Units to the first person to guess the songwriter in question, one BU for each word for guessing the song I am thinking of, and two BUs for a different song by (or associated with) that songwriter in which the word appears. I think this will be easier than the Stephen Sondheim one; I know at least a few of y’all are fans enough of this person to sing along, and many of the songs are quite well known indeed.

The List: I’ll try to keep this up-to-date. If a word is in bold, nobody has come up with nothing. If a word is struck through, some Gentle Reader has come up with the song that YHB was thinking of. If a word is in italics, some GR has come up with a different song by or at least associated with the songwriter YHB has in mind containing that word. If a word is both italicized and struck through then all the points are claimed for that word.

  • affiliation: Chris got this one
  • branded
  • consecrated
  • detention: Chris got this one too
  • erased
  • financially
  • gabardine: Dan P got this one
  • hemispheres
  • immaculate
  • juniper
  • knee
  • legalize
  • mannequins
  • neatly
  • obligations: Dan P got this one
  • prophets: Chris got this one too also
  • quietly
  • rattlesnake
  • seeping
  • turnpike: Chris got a different turnpike song, because it turns out there are more than one. The one I was thinking of is still available.
  • unaware
  • vanity
  • warning: Stephen got a different warning song. The one I was thinking of is still available.
  • explain
  • younger
  • zoo Chaos got this one

I plan to post this over at Facebook as well, for those that are there but not here; if that is confusing and irritating to y’all GRs, let me know.

Tolerabimus quod tolerare debemus,
-Vardibidian.

This is a coded guess, but I don’t want to give things away too early:

Me and Julio got out of the house of detention to look for America on the New Jersey Turnpike, but it had been sold to a loose affiliation of millionaires and billionaires, so we just went back to the schoolyard, where the words of the prophets were written.

Ding! Dingdingding! Hm. Was it easy, or is Chris just that good? 25 Bragging Units for the songwriter, and another, hm, affiliation, prophets, detention and turnpike, that’s four more for a total of 29 so far. Pretty good, but there are still quite a few BUs around for the taking.

      Thanks,
      -V.

Aw, man, I was just coming in from my RSS reader to say the same person.

(We sang two songs by this person in my high school choir, just totally aside from his ubiquity in the musical landscape of my youth.)

Unfortunately, Chris already got the specific songs I recognized and I refuse to stoop to google for the rest.

Now i’ve seen everything – you’re cluing a song with “Juniper” in it that isn’t “The World and His Wife”. (And, no, i don’t remember offhand what it is, oh well.)

And i strike out again, because the one with the crayons doesn’t actually have the word “quietly” in it, which i would have sworn it did.

But all is not totally lost, because something tells me it’s all happening at the place with the stuff.

Stephen–You get two BUs for that one, as I had not remembered that the word appears in “The Sounds of Silence” as well as the song I was thinking of.

Oh! Oh! The man in the gabardine suit was a spy! (fooled me for a bit, I didn’t think you’d go to that well twice.)

Or maybe there’s no obligations. But I have reason to believe we all will be received.

Gonna run this past N tonight, I’m sure she’ll catch a few.

I’m pretty sure MFQ dictates that if the game has inspired you to listen to the music, it would be churlish of me to disqualify later responses.

      Thanks,
