Squeak

I got new shoes a few weeks back (never did get around to writing up an entry on the harrowing ordeal that some call shoe-shopping; maybe someday). I rather like 'em: navy canvas uppers, solid rubber skid-resistant soles (not sure how they manage to be skid-resistant, given that there's almost no texture to them, but I guess rubber is skid-resistant even without texturing). But I've discovered one serious drawback to them:

They squeak.

Actually, that's not entirely accurate. A squeaking noise emanates from the vicinity of my shoes when I walk in them, but I'm not sure what causes it. It only happens when I wear my usual thick dark socks; when I wear white socks (of a different texture), it's minimal, and when I wear thin dark dress socks, there's little or no squeaking. So it must be the socks rubbing against the shoes in some way, but I can't figure out why these particular socks. Maybe just that the other socks are smoother, so slide more easily? I'm not sure why the socks are moving against the shoes at all. Tightening the laces helps a little, but not much.

I can sort of walk on tiptoe to avoid the squeaking, but then I'm tiptoeing around the office.

I considered WD-40, but somehow I think that shoes, like brakes, are among the items that should not be oiled no matter how much they squeak.

A conundrum.
