Not a heffalump in sight
Doesn't that boy talk about anything other than heffalumps these days?
Aside from the roundsing on Saturday, pretty much all my time lately (outside of work) has been taken up by editing. The imminence of a deadline for a couple of the year's-best anthos made it important for us to finalize all of December's fiction ASAP; since I've been getting stories finalized only about 3 to 10 days before they go live recently (and sometimes even less), that took some doing. But we're very close to having all of December's fiction final, at which point I'll be four weeks ahead for the first time in ages.
The plan, ever since before the launch of the magazine, was to have the next six to eight weeks' worth of material final and ready to go at all times. Unfortunately, I've never managed to be anywhere close to that. I hovered at three to four weeks ahead for a long time, then various things fell apart and I never recovered the lost time. Each time I'm about to get ahead again, stuff comes up. My lack of being ahead has caused all sorts of problems, including having to reschedule things and various last-minute flurries regarding payment. So it's a big relief to be a bit ahead, and I'm hoping to spend part of the December lull getting even further ahead. I don't know how likely that is, but at the very least I hope to not lose any ground.
Of course, all this time spent editing has meant I've fallen behind on reading subs. But I hope to catch up on that this coming weekend, and if not, there'll be a bit more time in December to catch up.
Tomorrow evening I'll be hanging out with Kam, who's (yay!) back in the Bay Area as of today. (She has a pretty shiny new PowerBook G4, too. I'm looking forward to meeting it. I'm tickled by the number of my friends who have PowerBooks and iBooks now.) Thursday I'm going to Thanksgiving dinner with Kam's family. Friday I have no plans at all; a good day to work on catching up on subs. Saturday is lunch with an old high school friend who I just got back in touch with a couple days ago after a much-too-long hiatus. (And who reads this journal—hi!)
'kay, I think this entry is long enough. Another to follow soon.
